The Netball Academy at Thornlie Senior High School provides students with an opportunity to combine sporting excellence and academic achievement. Students are encouraged to continue in the development of skills, physical fitness and aspirations, with an emphasis placed on individuals to strive for and achieve personal best.

Opportunities for players:

  • Students will be provided with opportunities to compete in SSWA competitions and Specialist Netball Carnivals.

Selection Criteria:

Students are selected to represent Thornlie Senior High School in the Netball Academy after completing the appropriate Application Stages:

  1. Applicants complete a Thornlie SHS Netball Academy Application Form and return it to the school.
  2. Selection Trials—Fitness and Skills Assessment will be carried out under the supervision of qualified staff and member/s of Southern Districts Netball Association.
  3. Academic Reports and References will be considered

Continued involvement in the program will require students to;

  • Participate consistently and to the best of their ability within the program throughout the year.
  • Maintain excellent school attendance and behaviour records
  • Maintain a positive attitude towards academic studies.
  • Maintain an affiliation with a Netball WA Club

Dance & Cheer Program

 

GENERAL PROGRAM

The Thunder Ohana General Dance Program caters for students from years 7-12 and has been designed to ensure that our students study theoretical and practical components of a range of Dance genres including Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Acrobatics, Lyrical, Contemporary, Pom and Cheerleading. Other opportunities our students have the chance to partake in, involve;

  • Year 11 & 12 Certificate II in Dance
  • Year 9 & 10 Dance
  • Year 7 & 8 Performing Arts
  • National/International Travel
  • Interschool Dance Festivals

COMPETITION PROGRAM

The Thunder Ohana Cheer & Dance Competition Program offers the opportunity for students to trial for teams that compete locally, nationally and on some occasions, internationally. At the beginning of each school year, students will be required to take part in a selection process that focuses not only on their physical capability, but their school attendance across all learning areas. In line with the Department of Education requirement, it is essential that all competition students obtain an attendance percentage of above 90 percent. Should students be successful in making a team, their physical progress and percentage of attendance will continually be monitored by our Coaches and Cheer & Dance Coordinators on a regular basis throughout the course of the year. Thunder Ohana Cheer & Dance Competition students will have the opportunity to participate in the following events;

  • National/International Cheer & Dance Competitions
  • All Star Cheer & Dance Competitions
  • Local Dance Competitions
  • Dance Showcases
  • Combined Arts Showcases
  • Competitive Cheerleading / Hip Hop / Pom / Jazz / Lyrical
  • Leadership Team

Instrumental Music Program

Instrumental Music Program

Thornlie Senior High School offers a selection based specialist program for students who have aspirations to learn an instrument and study Music. Entry for selection into the program is open to students in Year 6 to be considered for placement in the specialist class and tuition program for Year 7 and beyond.

Students can apply to be considered for placement to continue the instrument they are currently learning through their primary school IMSS program. We also offer placements in Year 7 for beginner students on selected instruments (subject to incoming numbers and existing places available).

We work in conjunction with Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) to offer a broad and diverse range of instruments, including:

  • Flute
  • Clarinet
  • Alto Saxophone
  • Trumpet
  • Low Brass
  • Contemporary Guitar
  • Classical Guitar
  • Percussion
  • Contemporary Voice

Beginner placements can be offered for the following instruments only:                                       

  • Contemporary Guitar
  • Contemporary Voice
  • Percussion
  • Clarinet or Saxophone (saxophone only offered every 2nd year)
  • Trumpet or Low Brass

Due to large incoming numbers of ongoing students from our feeder primary schools, we are unable to commence beginner placements in Flute or Classical Guitar due to high demand for those instruments.

Students who have commenced learning an instrument at their primary school can elect to continue that instrument in Secondary School or can request to commence as a beginner on a new instrument. Students are only eligible to receive free tuition on one instrument through this program.

Students who learn an instrument privately may apply to be included in the specialist class but will need to continue their private tuition out of school on a weekly basis (for example, piano students, strings, electric instruments etc.). Piano is not offered as an instrument of study through the IMSS program.

The IMSS Program

Students offered a place in the program will receive free weekly instrumental lessons (in small groups) until they complete Year 12 (students must continue to study Music as one of their subjects each year in order to continue to receive the free tuition).

They will be placed into one large ensemble to rehearse with their peers and a specialist music teacher once a week either before or after school to increase their technique and skills on the instrument and to increase their awareness of playing as part of a group. These groups will perform at Music Concerts and other special events throughout the school year. We currently have a diverse range of ensembles, including:

  • Concert Band
  • Choir
  • Junior Classical Guitar Ensemble
  • Senior Classical Guitar Ensemble
  • Percussion Ensemble
  • Flute Ensemble

Students will be required to come out of timetabled classes once a week to attend their instrumental lesson and may be required to purchase their own instrument and books. Individual tutors will outline the requirements when the school year commences. Students will also be given a daily practice journal which they will need to use regularly.

Students are expected to practice their instrument regularly and to attend the required ensemble and participate in concert performances as part of their commitment to the Music Program.

It is expected that students who accept a placement into the program will commit to studying Music and their instrument for a minimum of 4 years (years 7-10).

Student Selection and Application

To be accepted into the Instrumental Music Program, applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Willingness to participate in all facets of the program, including weekly tuition, weekly large ensemble rehearsals and musical performances as required.
  • Enthusiasm and aptitude for music – beginner students must complete a brief musical aptitude listening test.

Late to School Policy

Thornlie Senior High School – “Late to School Policy”

Punctuality is an important facet of our personal makeup, and a facet we promote with TSHS students with a view to engage them appropriately with each subject and maximize their learning opportunities.

The Late to School Policy aims to:

  • Promote punctuality as a worthwhile and valuable personal trait
  • Maximise learning opportunities by minimising late arrivals and disruptions to lessons.

A Late to School offence refers to:

  • Arriving to the first lesson of the day after the bell at 8:45am, more than once in a defined school week.
  • The student does not have legitimate claim to a SMS, phone call or email, or produce a note that authorises the repeat Late Arrivals (absences) from their parent/guardian.

Independent Review

The Independent Public Schools initiative is a State Government commitment to empower school communities by giving them greater capacity to shape the ethos, priorities and directions of their schools. Independent Public Schools assume greater responsibility for their own affairs and have greater flexibility to respond to their communities. They create more diversity in the public school system and help build strong communities that are more able to respond to the needs of students.

As an Independent Public School it means that we have the flexibility to select staff for vacancies and operate a One Line Budget. The school has an External School Review every three years to validate the progress of the Business Plan and Delivery and Performance Agreement.

In 2017 Thornlie SHS underwent an IPS Review. The results of this review are now available and can be viewed by clicking on the attached link.

Charges & Voluntary Contributions – WA Education Act

All Public Schools within Western Australia are governed by the WA School Education Act which can be accessed by clicking the link below. The Act states that a maximum amount of Voluntary Contributions to be requested for a Secondary School student in Year 7 – 10 is $235.00. Years 11 & 12 are Compulsory Charges.

Contributions & Charges for individual students have been posted home and amounts of Charges will vary depending on what Optional Subjects have been chosen by the family.

Business Plan

As an Independent Public School our School Development Plan has now become a Business Plan. This incorporates our Operational Plans and an overview of our One Line Budget. The Operational Plans are developed by all of the teachers working collaboratively and these plans are shared with the School Board.

One of the roles of the School Board is to review and endorse this plan. The completed Business Plan is then co-signed by the Principal, the Chair of the School Board and Ms Lisa Rodgers, Director General of Education in Western Australia.

Assessment Policy

THORNLIE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR SCHOOL ASSESSMENT POLICY

This policy is provided to all senior secondary students at Thornlie Senior High School and is based on School Curriculum and Standards Authority (Authority) requirements.

All Year 11 and year 12 students are enrolled in a combination of ATAR, General, Foundation and Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Certificates. Students gain credit for the WACE by completing an AQF qualification at Certificate II or Certificate III level. Students who complete the requirements of Workplace Learning also gain credit for the WACE.

Thornlie Senior High School is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). All students enrolling in Certificate Courses from any training package will receive a VET Policies and Procedures booklet, which outlines all RTO requirements. A separate acknowledgement form must be signed and returned to the Careers Centre by the specified date.

This policy applies to the assessment of all WACE courses.
